Full Year - Levels H, 1, 2, 3, 4 Credits 5


This course examines American literature, emphasizing works of prominent authors. Titles may vary according to the level of a particular class. Frequent papers are assigned, and emphasis is placed upon the basic skills of writing, agreement, usage, punctuation, and sentence structure. Levels H, 1, and 2 concentrate on the three-part essay. Levels 3 and 4 concentrate on paragraph writing in preparation for the three-part essay. Sophomores also may enroll in Drama electives described later in this section.


Essential Benchmarks – Students will:
• Demonstrate reader-response skills reflected in C.A.P.T.
• Demonstrate and apply command of mechanics and usage
• Compose three-part analytic essays
• Formulate and answer increasingly higher level questions (analysis, synthesis, evaluation) about a variety of written, visual, and oral texts
• Read selected classics of American literature, examine their status as classics, and assess ways in which they represent or reflect American culture.
