English III – Grade 11
Full Year - Levels H, 1, 2, 3, 4 Credits 5


This course continues to improve student reading, writing, and speaking skills through the study of
literature. In LH, L1 and L2, the emphasis is on British writers. In L3 and L4, American writers predominate. Literature includes the short story, novel, drama, poetry, biography, and autobiography.
Writing assignments of various lengths and types are required and comprise an integral part of the course. There is emphasis on vocabulary study and continued emphasis on grammar and usage skills. Juniors also may enroll in senior elective courses such as Journalism, Modern American Novel, or Creative Writing. Enrollment in these courses as a junior is optional and does not satisfy the Senior English requirement. Juniors also may enroll in the Drama electives.


Essential Benchmarks – Students will:

• Read selected classics of British literature and determine ways in which they have shaped Western culture and reasons for their being considered classics
• Compose analytic essays that explore and defend multiple interpretations of text using specific textual references
• Compose a reflective autobiographical essay which will create a foundation for the college application essay
• Edit and revise written work demonstrating proficiency in standard English grammar and usage.
